Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following remarks today on the 35th anniversary of the passage of the Clean Water Act. Congressman Dingell was the Member of Congress who made clear that Congress intended for the Clean Water Act to cover all waters of the United States on the House Floor in 1972: “It is amazing to think about how far we have come in 35 years, but I am concerned about what will happen over the next 35 years. Between the Supreme Court and the Bush Administration, protections for 50 percent of our streams and wetlands could be eliminated. The Clean Water Restoration Act will help keep our waters clean and courtrooms free of those more interested in their own best interests than those of the communities in which they live. I want to thank Congressman Oberstar for all he has done to keep all of our waters safe for future generations to enjoy." |
