| The laboratory and other testing facilities in this request are part of a larger coordinated effort among CVPC, TARDEC, MIS, MEDC, MDOT, and the automotive industry to make SE Michigan the international center of developments in connected vehicle technology that will attract/retain thousands of skilled jobs in Michigan and provide vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems that will save close to 30,000 lives and possibly prevent millions of crashes and injuries related to crashes. Furthermore, it will provide the foundation for the development of mobile communication systems that will make a significant improvement in military first response situations domestically and internationally. The public health benefits to the driver and taxpayer are in the range of $20 billion per year. The savings from the reductions in crashes, injury, and related costs are even greater. Add to this the increased security due to improved coordination in first response and other military applications, and the benefit/cost ratio makes this a required defense and public health measure. The Center for Automotive Research has done an impact study on the number of jobs in the state and this is in the range of 16,000 engineers and other skilled workers. |
