Project Name: "Point of Care Medications Administration", a health information technology initiative at Saint Joseph Mercy Health System
Project Address: Ann Arbor, MI
Amount Requested: $1,000,000
Federal Department or Agency: Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration
Individual or entity requesting this appropriation: St. Joseph Mercy Health System
Value to Michigan’s 15th Congressional District and the American taxpayer:
“Point-of-Care Medication” will confirm drug type and dosage at the bedside through a hand-held device used to scan the patient’s wristband, the nurse’s ID badge, and the medicine. The scanning devise then conducts what is called “five right” checking: right patient, right time, right drug, right dose, and right route (of administration). This information is transferred from the hand-held device into the patients’ electronic health record, helping to support coordination of care while ensuring patient safety. This new technology will help advance the national imperative for automated record systems while significantly enhancing care for the people of Michigan.
