Washington, D.C. – Today, Dean of the U.S. House of Representatives, John D. Dingell (D-MI15) issued the following statement regarding the situation in Egypt:
“After 18 days of largely nonviolent protests in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and across Egypt, I stand with the Egyptian people as they embark on the road to a truly representative democracy. Today is a historic moment for Egypt and a turning point in the Arab world. As President Obama said in his statement, ‘this is not the end of Egypt’s transition; this is the beginning.’ I am hopeful that the military will allow for implementation of the necessary democratic reforms, like amending the constitution and lifting the Emergency Law. I stand with the President in his commitment to providing the necessary assistance to the Egyptian people and its caretaker government as it transitions to a democracy for which the Egyptian people have so courageously strived during the past two weeks.”
