Congressman Dingell and UAW Mark Earth Day Week with ‘Big 3’ Auto Show

Dearborn, MI – Today, Congressman John D. Dingell (MI-15) marked Earth Day 2011 with representatives from the United Auto Workers and the Big 3 Automakers-- Chrysler, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors for an Earth Day Auto Show.  This event was held at UAW Region 1A in Taylor, Michigan to give members of the media a chance to get behind the wheels of the Big Three's union-made, homegrown green technology vehicles. Earlier this morning in Detroit, Congressman Dingell was honored as a 2011 “Green Leader” by the Detroit Free Press.

“Today, I am particularly proud to be standing here with labor and the auto companies to show some of the advanced technology that America is successfully producing at union shops right here at home,” said Dingell. “In order to keep good, quality jobs right here in the U.S., we must continue our national commitment to advance the domestic production of advanced technology vehicles.  American green vehicles are an all around win – for the economy, for the environment, for the American auto industry, and for the American worker.”

The automobiles featured at the event included:

  • Chevrolet Volt
  • Chevrolet Cruze
  • Dodge RAM PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) pickup
  • Chrysler 200 FFV convertible
  • Ford Focus
  • Ford Escape Hybrid

The Earth Day viewing event showcased the new technology and vehicles being developed in the United States that are environmentally friendly and fitting for all types of driving needs: families, individuals, businesses, schools, in rural and urban communities.  Engineers and representatives from all three American automakers gave presentations and ride/drive sessions to members of the media and the UAW.
