Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative John D. Dingell issued the following statement denouncing EPA’s decision to issue deep injection permits:
“I am deeply disappointed with the EPA’s decision allowing the Romulus deep-injection waste well to move forward. The people of Romulus and Taylor have been fighting this proposal, which turns their backyard into a hazardous waste dump, from the very beginning and nearly every community group in the area also opposes the plan. This process has been tainted from the start when the Engler Administration issued a Part 111 permit over the objections of its own site review board. I deplored the shoddy management practices when it began functioning under the permit the last time, and my feelings have not changed. ”
“I have fiercely opposed this multi-million dollar boondoggle since its inception and I will continue to look for ways to stop this project from potentially endangering the health and wellbeing of the good and honest folks this will affect.
“I fully expect the justified outrage of all the people in the area and their elected officials and governments will be proven well founded. I intend to monitor this matter with great care in full expectation that some real outrage will follow this administrative slovenliness."
