Congressman John D. Dingell Statement on President Obama’s Middle East Speech
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) issued the following statement today commending President Obama for his speech on the Middle East:
“I commend President Obama for laying out his powerful vision for the Middle East with the principles by which our nation will support the democratic ambitions and transitions now occurring throughout the region. I support the President’s recognition of universal rights –such as free speech and assembly, belief that America must not act solely in pursuit of narrow and short term interests, and pursuit of a better economic future for all. I echo the President’s praise of the millions of ordinary citizens who have, with incredible bravery, stood up for their rights in the face of brute violence and his condemnation of tyrannical powers like Iran, Syria, and Libya that suppress their citizens’ quest for justice. Finally, I praise the President for his continued support of Israeli-Palestinian peace as others express resignation. If Israel and the Palestinians can make the concessions President Obama listed in his speech, they have no better partner than the Obama Administration to help them realize a fair, just and lasting peace between Israel and a future state of Palestine.
“Through working in Congress and with my constituents I am ready to help the President continue to build bridges, support the democratic ambitions of our friends abroad, and maintain openness with the Muslim and Arab world.”
