Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) issued the following opening statement for the record at the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology hearing on “Using Spectrum to Advance Public Safety, Promote Broadband, Create Jobs, and Reduce the Deficit:”
“Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I commend you for holding this important hearing. I am particularly eager to engage in a substantive debate with my colleagues about spectrum policy. It is my hope that such debate yield tangible, timely, and well considered results.
“As my colleagues are no doubt aware, my abiding concerns related to spectrum reallocation are ensuring fairness and avoiding coercion altogether in voluntary incentive auctions. Likewise, I recognize the growing demand for wireless broadband services. I support efforts to identify and reallocate additional frequencies. If spectrum is to be reclaimed and re-auctioned to satisfy increased wireless demand, then that process must be equitable to all parties involved. This will require a fine understanding of the technical aspects of spectrum reallocation, relocation, and repacking, which is what I intend to explore with our witnesses today.
“I look forward to a collaborative, bi-partisan process moving forward on spectrum matters, Mr. Chairman. Thank you for your courtesy, and I yield back the balance of my time.”
