Representatives Dingell, Hall Introduce Bill Honoring 70th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, U.S. Representatives John D. Dingell (D-MI15) and Ralph Hall (R-TX04) introduced a special resolution in remembrance of the 70th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.  Since that tragic morning, our country has never forgotten the civilians and U.S. forces who were killed in the attacks.  The resolution presented today pays tribute to those who lost their lives and made the ultimate sacrifice to try and protect our country, as well as appreciates the strong relationship the United States now has with Japan.

In honor of the 70th Anniversary, Representatives Dingell and Hall have introduced H.Con.Res. 89.  H.Con.Res. 89 will:

  • Pay tribute to the members of the Armed Forces of the United States and civilians who died in the attack;
  • Honor the thousands of men and women of the Armed Forces of the United States who paid the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives in defense of freedom and liberty during World War II;
  • Acknowledge the continued peaceful and mutually beneficial relationship between the United States and Japan;
  • Express appreciation for the efforts of Japan as one of the most reliable security partners of the United States in the global war on terrorism; and,
  • Encourage Japan to continue to develop strategic and economic policies, in partnership with the United States, that promote stability throughout Asia and reduce barriers in trade between the two nations.

“In his address to the nation on December 8, 1941, Franklin D. Roosevelt called the attack on Pearl Harbor, ‘A day that will live in infamy’,” said Dingell.  “As veterans of World War II, President Roosevelt’s words and the attack on Pearl Harbor hold a solemn place in our hearts and minds.  This fateful incident not only cost many Americans their lives, but it precipitated our entry into World War II and had a lasting impact on the world, which can still be felt today.  As we all come together and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice on that fateful day seventy years ago, we must all recognize and honor their service, for they inspire all Americans to seek to preserve and protect our great Nation and democracy.”

"As a WWII veteran, I remember well the attack on Pearl Harbor the morning of December 7th, and the resulting impact it had across America," said Hall. "It is appropriate that today, on the 70th Anniversary of the attack, we reflect on the sacrifice of men and women at Pearl Harbor, as well as give thanks for the freedom every American enjoys due to the continued sacrifice of servicemen and women today."
