Social Security

For more than 60 years, Social Security has provided retirement, disability and survivors benefits that have kept generations of people out of poverty and provided a secure base for middle class retirement. Today, over 44 million workers and family members receive Social Security benefits. Prior to the enactment of Social Security, more than 1/3 of our seniors lived in poverty.

Today, mostly because of Social Security, that number has dropped to 11 percent. Social Security benefits are the major source of income for two out of three elderly beneficiaries and the only source on income for almost 20 percent of our seniors. Without Social Security more than half of our seniors would live in poverty.

Congressman Dingell has fought against radical schemes to privatize this most important program, of which his father, Congressman John D. Dingell Sr. (link to photos – headshot and SS signing) was an architect. Representative Dingell will continue to fight to preserve, protect, strengthen and defend Social Security for the new millennium so future generations will continue to be guaranteed against poverty in retirement.
