Washington, D.C. – Dean of the United States House of Representatives, John D. Dingell (D-MI15) released the following statement today saluting Dr. Martin Luther King and recognizing the holiday which honors his life and his service:
“When Congress made Martin Luther King, Jr. Day a national holiday, we did so with the intent that it would recognize the life and service of a great man; but more than that, Congress wanted to provide at least one day of year in which we could reflect on the ideals of peace and justice for which Dr. King so eloquently and bravely advocated.
“Dr. King asked that we make the effort to live in a way that recognizes the inherent dignity and value of every person and to remember that the merit of our ideas, not the power we possess, can change minds and this nation. His message is just as timely and just as necessary as it was when he was with us. His life of service provides guidance for peacemaking, evokes activism for bettering mankind with justice, love, and truth, and calls on us to have respect for all when we have passionate debates.
“When we in America all work together in a manner that reflects Dr. King’s example, we are a more peaceful and stronger nation and serve one another better. I am honored and humbled by him still—a tremendous American, a true patriot for peace, and a remarkable human being.”
