Washington, DC - {"I understand that today's announcement by President Obama is a fulfillment of a campaign promise and I look forward to working with him and his Administration as this process moves forward. President Obama and I both share the goal of energy independence and a cleaner environment for our children and grandchildren. We have a unique opportunity in history to address the issue of global climate change and we must take bold and balanced action.
“I know the President understands the economic and consumer issues involved with the California waiver and I am glad that his Administration will take some time to study the issue of setting a patchwork of different emission standards for greenhouse gases from motor vehicles before it acts. I am hopeful that as EPA begins the process of reconsidering the waiver it will act in a thoughtful and careful manner. The President and EPA need to lead and cooperate with the states in setting a single, aggressive standard for greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles. I look forward to working with the President, the EPA and all the stakeholders involved to resolve this delicate and important issue in a way that doesn't further endanger an already fragile industry.
“I invite the President and key members of his Administration to come to Detroit to see firsthand the progress being made on the next generation of green vehicles. Additionally, I encourage all Members of Congress and the Administration to attend the Washington Auto Show in early February to see for themselves the great strides Detroit automakers and its world-class workers are making.”}
