15th District SchoolsCould Make Major Gains from Stimulus Program

Washington, DC - Michigan’s 15th Congressional District’s schools stand receive more than $48 million for school modernization projects and existing learning programs under the economic recovery package being discussed in Congress.  Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) cited the findings from the Congressional Research Service and its review of the first draft of the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009”.

“Our schools provide our children with the educational foundation to be successful later in life. Unfortunately, too often we have seen that our teachers and schools do not have the resources they need to provide safe and quality learning facilities or offer assistance to children who are struggling,” said Congressman Dingell. “We also know that good schools are critical to attracting talented teachers and involved families who want to provide the best education for their children. This is particularly true in the 15th District, where many people work in our fine schools and universities. This money will help Michigan during this period of recovery and the entire country stands to benefit as well. I commend the Obama administration for thinking creatively about this economic recovery.”

Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, $14 billion is allocated nationally for K-12 school modernization construction (including funding to “green” our schools and technology updates), $13 billion for Title I-A grants and $13 billion in IDEA special education grants (more information on these grants below).
