Dingell Breaks Record on February 11, not February 14

Washington, DC - The U.S. House of Representatives Historian’s office has determined that Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) will become the longest serving House Member in U.S. history on February 11, 2009, passing Congressman Jamie Whitten from Mississippi.  An earlier report by the Congressional Research Service (CRS) indicated that the Congressman would break the record on February 14, 2009, but the Historian’s office and CRS reviewed the findings again and found a mistake in the count of days served by Mr. Dingell.

“I’ve made a couple of math mistakes in my day, so I can hardly blame the people that came up with the original number,” Dingell said. “I’m just glad the House Historian’s office found the error and Congressional Research Service worked with the historians to get it right.  CRS also does tremendous work and we have great respect for their research.”
