Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) announced today he would be co-sponsor of Congresswoman Betty Sutton’s (D-OH13) bill that would give vouchers to American consumers trading in older vehicles for new, more fuel efficient vehicles. The bill would give consumers a $3,000 to $5,000 incentive to buy more fuel-efficient cars, trucks or use mass transit.
“Any program that gets newer, greener cars onto our roads and takes less efficient cars off is a good thing and similar programs in Germany and other countries have shown to be tremendously effective. Our automakers are unveiling new advanced technology vehicles at a rapid pace, and across the country Americans seem eager to buy them. This legislation will give consumers a boost, will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and will decrease our greenhouse gas emissions, which is an important step in the fight against global climate change. I’m pleased to be a co-sponsor of this bill and I commend Congresswoman Sutton, Congressman Gary Peters and others for their fine work. I urge Congress to move quickly on this inspired bill, which is an environmental win and an economic stimulant.”
