Dingell on President Obama’s CAFE Decision

Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following comments after the Obama administration unveiled its 2011 fuel economy standard of 27.3 miles per gallon today:

“Today’s announcement by the Department of Transportation gives automakers much needed certainty until 2011.  I urge the Administration to follow this rulemaking by setting a single, national standard that gives the automakers an aggressive, obtainable target to meet going forward.  We have the best workers in the world working in the American automobile industry, and they can and will meet the challenges of the future.

“The President and his Administration recognize the auto industry is in a period of transition.  There is clearly demand for automobiles that can achieve President Obama’s new standard and the Big 3 have cars coming to showrooms that can meet this ambitious goal. I believe that the Big 3 will again be industry leaders, in terms of fuel economy standards, safety, and customer satisfaction.  Having new, environmentally-friendly choices is one of the first benefits that Americans will see as the automakers emerge from their restructuring.”
