Dingell Announces Grant for Port of Monroe

Monroe, MI - The Port of Monroe will be able to purchase security equipment, including a new video system, lighting, and fencing with the help of a $195,750 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) announced today.  The grant comes from FEMA’s Port Security Grant Program.

“Security investments in the Port of Monroe will provide meaningful security measures to other facilities and entities throughout the region including the Port, the Raisin River, the Fermi Nuclear Power Generation Facility and the Detroit Edison coal power plant,” Congressman Dingell said. “We are grateful to FEMA for this needed investment and to the Port, for making a wonderful case for the value of these funds.”

Tom Krzyston, Chairman of the Monroe Port Commission, commented: “The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has increased security requirements at Ports around the U.S.  Security measures must be enhanced at the Port of Monroe to meet these regulations. The FEMA grant will allow the Port to begin making the necessary security upgrades required by Homeland Security.”

The camera system will allow facility personnel to gain greater awareness of waterfront activity. When combined with the new fencing and lighting, the Port will increase its capability of preventing access to the port from small vessels and others intent on an IED or WMD attack.  The grant will defray 75% of the cost to purchase needed fencing, lighting, and camera monitoring system.

DTE Energy Company also received $75,000 in a separate request for its facilities in Monroe, MI through this round of FEMA funding.
