Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following comments after learning the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) is filing a petition for revocation of Environmental Disposal Systems' (EDS) operating licenses at the hazardous liquid waste deep injection wells in Romulus, Michigan.
“While I am quite pleased about the news that MDEQ is taking the next step in the process of revoking EDS’ permits, we still have a road ahead. The people of Romulus and Taylor have fought this project for years, and it has not come without a great deal of suffering. The very residents who did not want these wells in the first place lived with fear after learning the site failed to live up to the promises of safety made by EDS. There are also many people who lost money investing in EDS and I am sorry they were suckered into a bad bet. While this is the outcome we wanted, it is hard to call it a success. My hope is that any prospective investor who thinks he or she can do it better learns from this experience. Everyone who has touched this waste well project has suffered for it. It is time to find a different purpose for this land and give up on the waste well for good.”
