Dearborn, MI - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following remarks after learning of the passing of Senator Edward Kennedy, the “liberal lion of the Senate”:
“I was deeply saddened to hear of the loss of my dear friend, Senator Kennedy. The world has lost a true champion and fighter for moral and just causes – like health care, civil rights and creating opportunities for our children. He was a true believer in the positive role government can play in the lives of all Americans. There are very few legislators throughout history who have been as effective as Senator Kennedy in making advances on behalf of the American people. I will always remember the legislative victories Senator Kennedy and I have shared on behalf of the elderly, disabled, and less fortunate.
“Ted Kennedy was a true friend. He came to Michigan in 2002 to campaign for me during one of the toughest races of my career. During that race, he told me he’d do whatever he could to help me – and he meant it. If he was fighting for a friend, he’d throw himself on the tracks to save you. He knew all too much about grief, but he knew how to heal and console and he shared those lessons with anyone who needed them. The hundreds of men and women who served on Capitol Hill will all tell you he could be the most fierce warrior as well as the most compassionate soul.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Vicki, Patrick, and the entire Kennedy family. It is little consolation in this time of deep sadness, but I know his family will take pride in the way he carried on the tremendous legacy of public service that has made the Kennedy name so revered for millions of American families. The family’s service has made America a better nation. We’ve become better people from watching their example of strength in times of great despair. On behalf of my dear friend Senator Kennedy, I promise to continue the fight for a cause that both of us spent our entire careers for - access to quality, affordable health care for every American.”
