Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) applauded the Department of Energy (DOE) for awarding the State of Michigan the remaining funding for the State Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program. Michigan received a total of nearly $9.6 million for the program, with the final 90% of funding awarded today by DOE after final approval of Michigan’s program plan. The program is intended to improve energy efficiency in American homes by funding state-run rebate programs for consumers who purchase new ENERGY STAR qualified home appliances. The ENERGY STAR rebate program is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
“The ENERGY STAR rebate program is an excellent way to encourage energy efficiency in homes across Michigan and decrease greenhouse gas emissions while supporting economic growth and job creation,” Dingell said. “I am confident that the State of Michigan put forth a comprehensive plan for this program, as recognized today by the DOE, that will benefit the environment, consumers, the State of Michigan, and the nation as this program moves forward.”
The ENERGY STAR rebate program was announced in July of 2009, making available nearly $300 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to be awarded to states using a formula set forth by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 after approval of state submitted applications. Michigan, Colorado, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, and Washington, received 10% of the total allocations in September, 2009 and were awarded the remaining 90% this week following final approval of their state plans. Michigan received $959,800 in September and was awarded the remaining $8,638,200 this week.
