Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following remarks after General Motors (GM) announced today the company would invest $336 million in the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant where the Chevrolet Volt will be produced. The Volt is expected to roll off the Hamtramck assembly line, complete with lithium-ion batteries made at a GM facility in Brownstown Township under the hood, in late 2010.
“Today’s announcement serves as a reminder of three things:
“One, GM is committed to producing the greener, more energy-efficient vehicles American consumers want and climate change demands;
“Two, GM is making the changes to its business model needed to compete in the 21st century; and
“Three, GM is committed to doing business in Michigan, home to the finest workers in the world.
“All the reasons mentioned above are cause for celebration. I am happy for my many friends in Hamtramck and my constituents in Brownstown Township, many of whom look forward to producing the marvelous new lithium-ion batteries that will power the Volt. We look forward to more good news from GM in the days, months and years ahead.”
