Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15), the longest serving Member in the history of the House of Representatives, sent the following note to Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) after attending a reception today honoring the Senator for becoming the longest serving Member in the history of the United States Congress.
To My Dear Friend Robert:
You were one of the people who welcomed me to the House when I arrived here in 1955. I was sad to see you leave the House for that other body. While we have missed your leadership, the Nation is better off for your service over there. You have, and you continue, to make this country a better place with your skill and wisdom. As one of millions of Americans who has benefitted from your work, I want to thank you and congratulate you on this milestone.
That said, if you ever figure out that you are better off over here in the House, I’d be happy to help you knock off a Republican to get back to the other chamber. Think it over...
With every good wish,
Sincerely yours,
D
John D. Dingell
