Dearborn, MI – Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following remarks today at a discussion on the $63.4 million grant for The Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), headquartered at the University of Michigan (UM) in Ann Arbor. It is the largest research award ever to the UM Medical School. The National Cancer Institute announced a six-year renewal of its operating grant last month.
“This grant is a tribute to the exemplary work of the people that make Michigan a leading institution. The Southwest Oncology Group’s fine work saves the lives of mothers, fathers, sons and daughters and we all benefit from them getting additional investment to do more. SWOG and similar cooperative research groups enable their members to conduct clinical trials that would not be possible if each member attempted to conduct such trials unilaterally. Through the cooperative efforts of its members, SWOG is able to increase the number of patients participating in trials and improve the statistical significance of the results. Their national scope also means they can draw on the best minds in the field from all across the country.”
