Washington, DC - The Dean of the House of Representatives, Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15), made the following remarks after after Congressman Dave Obey (D-WI07), the chair of the House Appropriations Committee, announced that he will not seek re-election.
“David Obey will not be judged by the time he spent in Congress, but all the good he did while he served here. In two stints as Chairman of Appropriations, he has proved to be the most efficient Chairman that Committee has ever known. In addition to working to restore funding for important things like conservation and healthcare, he has led the charge to make the business of Congress more transparent and understandable for the American people. He has been one of our most articulate and thoughtful spokesmen on all issues before the House. The American people will miss David Obey and I will miss Dave Obey. In addition to being a colleague, Dave is a friend. I wish him, Joan and their two sons all the happiness in the world. He deserves it.”
