Dingell Pleased by Administration Action to Cleanup Willow Run

Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following remarks after learning Michigan will receive $161 million from The Obama administration and the part of General Motors left behind in last year's bankruptcy to pay for environmental remediation at closed GM sites including the former Willow Run plant in Ypsilanti.

“I am very thankful for the Administration’s decision to fund the cleanup of Willow Run.  This will speed up the process of transforming facilities like those at Willow Run into much-needed job creation centers.  Historically, it takes a long time to accomplish projects such as these, but the Administration’s well-timed decision will allow us to cut through red tape and get back to putting people back to work in areas of the country hardest hit by the economic downturn.  Further, this announcement is of great importance to the State of Michigan and the Ypsilanti community, which are severely strapped for cash at the moment.”

Willow Run is one of the largest “old GM” cleanup sites in the country.  State officials and the bankruptcy court still must approve the cleanup plan. When that happens, the trust running the project could be running by the end of the year.
