Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) offered the following statement upon hearing that Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announced $3.79 million in an On-the-Job Training National Emergency Grants to Michigan. Michigan received the third largest grant. This funding is part of $75 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds released to assist re-employment of dislocated workers.
“I applaud DOL’s continued commitment to helping Michigan workers earn new opportunities. Many workers who have been displaced cannot forego a paycheck for training or higher education due to mortgage payments, child care costs, utility bills, among other expenses. This funding, $3.79 million of which will go to Michigan, will help these workers to continue to earn a paycheck, while learning new skills for a future career.”
On-the-Job Training Grants help employers to create training and job opportunities for dislocated workers. The “earn and learn” system allows workers to develop the necessary skills for a job, and partially reimburses employers for training workers, creating a well-qualified workforce. These grants are a part of the Dislocated Worker National Reserve. Attached is a full listing the 41 states, District of Columbia, and Native American tribes which received funding. Additional information about On-the-Job Training grants can be found here.
