Dingell on Newest Effort to Protect Great Lakes from Invasive Species

Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following remarks on H.R. 5625,  the Permanent Prevention of Asian Carp Act, which would permanently prevent Asian carp and other invasive species from entering the Great Lakes.

“I applaud the efforts of my Michigan colleagues to take action on Asian carp.  Asian carp pose a genuine threat to our Great Lakes – and they are not the only species out there which could do enormous damage.  We must learn from the experience in the Gulf of Mexico and take measures to prevent a crisis before it happens.  After careful research, I feel strongly that permanent hydrologic separation holds the most promise to protect our Lakes from invasives.  This will address our current threat from the carp and also address future threats that could disrupt live in the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River as well.  We need to get the Permanent Prevention of Asian Carp Act signed into law as soon as possible.”
