Washington, DC - It will soon be easier to defend yourself from recessions and denials by insurance companies, thanks to new rules announced by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today. The new regulations are similar to provisions included in the Patients’ Bill of Rights bill introduced by Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) in the 1990s. Patients will be able to appeal insurers’ decisions, either directly to the companies or to external review boards. By next year, more than 40 million people will have new appeal rights. Congressman Dingell made the following comments on the new regulations.
“This is a powerful new tool in the hands of regular people that will empower them if we see continued rascality from the insurance companies,” Dingell said. “The decisions on medical care belong in the hands of patients and doctors. When we pushed the Patients’ Bill of Rights, we envisioned protections that would allow patients to fight back when insurance companies did them wrong. Now, that is happening. This is long overdue, but another sign of the good that is coming from the health care reform law. The work Congress did last year on this history bill is benefitting the American people.”
