Dearborn, Mich. – Today, U.S. Representative John D. Dingell (D-MI15) met with the sheriffs and police chiefs from the 15th District at the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s office to discuss federal funding programs for their departments and the current challenges their departments face.
"Our communities rely on these departments,” said Dingell. “And while we can never truly repay our first responders for their brave efforts and dedication, we can ensure they have the equipment and resources they need to do their jobs well.”
During today’s meeting, Dingell provided the law enforcement officials with a brief update of the Congressional FY 2011 budget process as it relates to first responder funding. In turn, he listened to the officials on the issues and challenges their departments face. They also discussed the grant programs that might be helpful for their departments—particularly the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), Byrne-JAG, and Juvenile Justice Grant Programs.
Said Dingell, “At a time when states are forced to cut back, these programs serve as a lifeline. The fiscal year 2011 funding situation, unfortunately, has not been reconciled, putting these critical programs at a standstill. In Washington, I will do my utmost to continue funding law enforcement grants so that our state and local law enforcement agencies can continue to receive the funding they need to fight crime.”
"The law enforcement leadership of the 15th District appreciates Congressman Dingell's efforts regarding public safety,” said Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry L. Clayton, who co-hosted the event along with Congressman Dingell. “Helping communities build and sustain safe neighborhoods is a core government function. As public safety officials, it is important that we have a complete understanding of the current and future economic landscape as we develop effective public safety strategies for the communities we serve. Conversations, such as the one led by Congressman Dingell, provide critical information that we believe will prove extremely beneficial to both the regional and local jurisdiction planning process."
Congressman Dingell has been a longtime leading advocate for law enforcement funding. He continues vigorous oversight in the 112th Congress to see that these critical funding programs stay intact to ensure that our law enforcement agencies have the manpower, resources and tools to keep our communities safe.
