Washington, D.C. –U.S. Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) released the following statement today on the passing of his friend and former colleague Geraldine Ferraro:
“I am deeply saddened at the passing of a friend who did so much to advance the issues for women. Geraldine Ferraro was a dear friend and former colleague whose accomplishments are revered by many. Gerry was a brilliant and gracious woman whose drive and spirit pioneered a legacy that set the stage for so many future women leaders. As we remember her, the best salute we can give to her is to fight to make sure the advances she helped achieve are not rolled back.
“This weekend, Washtenaw County saluted the hard work and efforts of another woman trailblazer, one of Michigan's leaders, Ms. Jean King. As we begin this week and celebrate women's history month, we need to not take for granted what Gerry, Jean and so many have fought for. Their legacies are encouraged and strengthened by the decades of work by women and men in this country to move women forward in the workforce, in equal pay for equal work, in health care treatment and research like Title X. I applaud women like Gerry and Jean and am grateful for their commitment to service and contribution to this wonderful nation of ours.”
