Washington, D.C. –U.S. Representative John D. Dingell (D-MI15) delivered remarks today at a press conference with Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Assistant Democratic Leader James E. Clyburn, and House Democrats to unveil the “Make It in America” agenda for the 112th Congress. Below are his remarks:
“This past January, my dear friend Steny Hoyer came to Detroit to see first-hand the impact of federal dollars on preserving, protecting and creating American manufacturing jobs. He heard how investment in our domestic auto companies and their workers is having a direct impact on job creation in this country.
“Because of our targeted investments, sales of domestically-produced cars is up significantly; Americans are getting back to work and taxpayers are being repaid for their loans. You have to look no further than yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, the headline on the Business section reading: ‘Pendulum Swings Back Toward Detroit’.
“Right here in America, we are building safer and more fuel efficient cars than ever, and with our homegrown ingenuity, American autos will continue competing and winning in the global economy.
“We must continue this smart federal investment in manufacturing and its workers – we have the best workers in the world and we know that on a level playing field, they will compete and win. We were wise to bet on Detroit again, and wiser still to continue that investment.”
