MONROE, MI—On Wednesday, July 6, 2011, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Congressman John Dingell will view the results of public-private partnerships to establish the River Raisin National Battlefield Park and enhance coastal wetland habitats at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge in Michigan.
At 9:45am, Salazar and Dingell will join local officials for a ceremonial signing transferring donated and purchased land to the Port of Monroe for the restoration and development of River Raisin National Battlefield Park. River Raisin, the site of a key battle of the War of 1812 that rallied American forces and eventually led to British forces being driven from the region, was formally established as a part of the National Park System in October, 2010. This will be Secretary Salazar’s first visit to the site.
At 12:45pm, Salazar and Dingell will visit the Detroit International Wildlife Refuge to announce recent land acquisitions that will protect valuable habitats and provide recreational opportunities for the urban community.
