DINGELL SUPPORTS CONTINUING BUDGET RESOLUTION THAT PRESERVES SECTION 136 PROGRAM

Washington, D.C.  – Today, Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) issued the following statement in support of today’s House Motion to Concur in the Senate Amendment to H.R. 2608 - Continuing Appropriations Act, 2012. The motion passed the House by a vote of  352 - 66:

“This short-term continuing resolution is certainly an improvement over the last version the House considered, which would have irresponsibly killed the job-creating Section 136 program run by the Department of Energy, also known as the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing (ATVM) loan program, that helps fund the initial development of innovative fuel efficient vehicles that will help America wean itself off of foreign sources of oil while also creating American manufacturing jobs.

“While I voted in favor of this legislation today, I would note that this is no way to run a government.  Passing spending bills which only last a few weeks is irresponsible and is doing real damage to our economic recovery.

“Today’s vote demonstrates another ‘fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants’ legislating style that is unfortunately the common approach this Congress. We need to pass a long-term funding measure soon so that federal agencies can properly plan for the year ahead.  I urge all members of this body to come together and find compromise on this important issue.”
