American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009

We are in the midst of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Nationally, over eight million jobs have been lost since the start of the recession. In Michigan, over 700,000 workers are unemployed and the unemployment rate in the state hovers at about 15%. Even those who have not lost their jobs are hurting: many workers are now considered underemployed, declines in the stock market have depleted retirement accounts, the financial crisis has reduced the availability of credit to consumers and small business owners, and foreclosures have devastated neighborhoods.

To address this crisis, Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) last year. ARRA was intended to create jobs in America by rebuilding our nation’s crumbling infrastructure, encourage consumer spending by offering individual tax cuts, and promote economic growth through investment in technology and education.

The map below shows projects funded by ARRA in Michigan's 15th Congressional District. Awards cited on the map reflect recipient reported data, as published on recovery.gov. The amounts shown are local amounts. Note that some award recipients, such as the Washtenaw Intermediate School District and the Wayne County Intermediate School District, serve areas not entirely within the boundaries of the 15th Congressional District, so funds awarded to them may be split with neighboring congressional districts in Southeast Michigan.

The map reports awards received under ARRA between February 19, 2009, and June 30, 2010.
