Constituent Guide to Grants

Reach your goals and strengthen your business by taking advantage of one or more of the hundreds of grant opportunities at the federal, state, and local level, covering a wide spectrum of industries and objectives.  Please note that this grant guide is not tailored towards grants for individuals, because the vast majority of grant funding is for public and private organizations.

The first step in the grant seeking process is finding the grant program that meets your specific goals and qualifications.  In this guide, you will find resources to help you identify the grant that suits your organization’s aims and abilities.

Once you have found a grant program, our comprehensive guide to writing grant proposals can aid you in developing a dynamic program idea and preparing a compelling grant proposal.  Drafting a well-formed grant proposal is perhaps the most important part of the grant application process, as well as the most time consuming part.  As daunting as this task may be, with some preparation and know-how, you can create a compelling proposal that is competitive.  First, contact the agency or foundation program administering the grant to find out the specific requirements of the grant program, such as funding available, application deadlines, and eligibility requirements.  Next, develop an idea for a feasible project that fulfills the mission of the grant program you are interested in.  Once you have developed a sound project, you should be able to answer the following questions:

  • What are the intended outcomes or goals of the project?
  • How will you conduct the project?
  • What are the supplies and personnel required to carry out the project?
  • What is the timetable for the project?
  • What is the budget for the project?
  • How will project’s progress be monitored?
  •

When the project is logistically polished, you are ready to begin writing your grant proposal.  You will find an in depth guide to grant proposal writing here.
